A cloudy day in the spring of 1899. The wind sweeps across the sea, whipping up small whitecaps. The old lighthouse keeper, Otto, goes about his daily routine. As he wades into the mudflats, he is startled: a young man lies motionless on the shore. Upon closer inspection, Otto realizes the boy is still breathing.
Overwhelmed, Otto’s face reveals his inner turmoil. It has been so long since he last had contact with another human being.
Slowly, Joseph earns Otto’s trust and begins to help him with daily tasks. They fish together and sing to the off-key sounds of Otto’s harmonica. Yet, despite the growing bond, Otto’s deep-seated fear of strangers threatens to break the fragile connection between them.
